The BCFD Dazzlers are a group of award winning dancers who compete at regional and national competitions and attend workshops throughout the year. Dancers ages 5 and 6 are chosen by their instructors to be a Dazzler. Dancers ages 7 and up must audition to be a Dazzler, auditions are held during the first two weeks in June of every summer. The Dazzler competition and performing team travels to approximately 4-5 regional events each year within the state of Florida as well as one National event every other summer which could require travel outside of Florida. Also, Dazzlers are often invited to do performances throughout the community each season.
All Dazzlers must be enrolled in the following classes - 2 ballet classes, 2 jazz classes, one lyrical class, one technique class, one tap class, one clogging class, one acro class and one Dazzler class each week - this is a minimum. Dazzlers must also devote some weekday evenings and some weekends to group practices, workshops or competitions. Dazzlers may choose to perform as a solosist or in a duet/trio in addition to group performances. We encourage students to perform as a solist or duet/trio member and offer information on additional performance/competition opportunities in addition to the required schedule; however, whenever a conflict arises group routines always take priority.
The Dazzler experience has proven to be a positive experience for all involved. All of us at Barbara’s Centre’ For Dance consider participation in competition to be a reflection of our studios solid reputation for quality. Not simply in the way we train our students to dance, but on how we influence them as people. It is our goal to develop a genuine respect for dance as art form in each of our competition team members.
With the right focus, the experience can be an excellent motivation of self-confidence. If the dancer feels good about their performance and understands that they are better each time, then they are truly growing from through competition. Hitting that stage and doing the best they can is what it’s all about, what the dancer actually wins becomes secondary.
At Barbara’s Centre’ For Dance, we instill an appreciation for other dancers and their studios. We are not out to beat anyone; we are out to motivate our kids and faculty by exposing them to a highest caliber of talent available. Only then are we going to produce the best dancers and teachers possible. For us, competition is an education!
